Rivalry Series Day 1 delivered almost everything you could have asked for from the opening day of a tournament built around national pride, bragging rights and some of Africa’s best EA SPORTS FC 26 players.

Five countries arrived in Lagos looking to make a statement. By the end of the opening day, Kenya was sitting at the top of the table, level on points with Nigeria but ahead on goal difference.

That was not how many people expected the story to begin. Kenya entered the tournament as one of the underdogs, while Senegal came in with serious expectations around Dexx Jr, a player widely regarded as one of the best competitors in Africa. But football rarely follows the script. And Day 1 proved that very quickly.

Rivalry Series Day 1 Starts With Nigeria vs Ghana

The tournament opened with a matchup that already carried plenty of history. Nigeria and Ghana know each other well, and the rivalry between the two countries made them a perfect pairing to get the competition started.

With two players representing each nation, the fixture was decided across two games. The first brought together two players who had already earned their place through the original Esports Nations Cup qualification route.

Nigeria’s Faruk Manzo faced Ghana’s Kyran, and neither player could separate himself from the other. The match ended 3-3, giving both sides a point on the individual scoreboard.

Then came the second game. Nigeria’s John Okamm, better known as KillerFreak, faced Survival. This time there was no doubt about the winner. KillerFreak produced one of the biggest individual scorelines of the day, beating Survival 10-3. That gave Nigeria a 13-6 aggregate victory over Ghana and put the hosts in a strong position early in the tournament.

For Ghana, however, there was still plenty of football left to play. And they would get another chance to respond later in the day.

Kenya Shocks Senegal

Then came the result that changed the mood around the tournament. Kenya had been viewed as an underdog. Senegal had one of the players many people expected to make a major difference in Dexx Jr.

Shaq and Prorate

The stage was set for Kenya to prove whether it could compete with the favorites. And the answer came quickly. Shaq destroyed Coldfire 7-1. The result was a huge statement from the Phoenix Esports player, who has spent much of 2026 building a reputation as one of East Africa’s most exciting FC players.

But Kenya was not finished. Prorate then stepped into the other game against Dexx Jr. This was supposed to be another major test for Kenya. Instead, Prorate produced another thriller and came out on top 10-8. Kenya had done it. 17-9 against Senegal.

Shaq Says Kenya Simply Had to Play Its Game

After the upset, Shaq was asked about the approach that helped Kenya pull off such a big result. His answer was simple.

“We just had to play our game, enjoy the game, stick to our game plan and just relax.”

That mentality was visible in the result. There was no panic. No attempt to overcomplicate things. Kenya simply played its game and took advantage of its opportunities.

Meanwhile, Prorate described Dexx “one of the best players from Africa, top three in the region.”

While Prorate’s win over Dexx might be a surprise to many across the continent, people who follow East African FC esports know the performance was not completely unexpected. Prorate has been one of the most consistent players in the Kenyan scene for the past two years. He reached the Betika final last year, narrowly losing to Harry Kappa, but still walked away with KSh 250,000. He is also a back-to-back finalist of the eLigue 1 qualifiers, and lost in the semi-finals this year to Shaq.

Ghana Responds Against Côte d’Ivoire

Ghana did not allow the loss to Nigeria to define its day. The team returned later to face Côte d’Ivoire, and this time Ghana got the result. Survival defeated CKE 6-5 in the first game. Kyran then edged Neotrix 4-3. That gave Ghana a 10-8 aggregate victory.

It was exactly the kind of response Ghana needed after losing the opening fixture to Nigeria. The result also kept Ghana within touching distance of the leaders. After the first day, Ghana had three points, only one behind Kenya and Nigeria. So while Kenya and Nigeria had the strongest starts, the tournament was far from decided.

Kenya and Nigeria Share the Spoils

Kenya’s second fixture of the day was against the hosts. Nigeria had already shown what it could do against Ghana. KillerFreak was coming off a massive 10-3 win. The 21-year-old got Nigeria off to the perfect start again, defeating Shaq 5-3.

For a moment, it looked like the hosts might take another full victory. But Prorate had other ideas. He responded with a 5-3 win over Faruk Manzo. The two results cancelled each other out as it was 8-8 on aggregate.

What the Table Looks Like After Rivalry Series Day 1

After the opening fixtures, the leaderboard was:

  1. Kenya: 4 points, +8 goal difference
  2. Nigeria: 4 points, +6 goal difference
  3. Ghana: 3 points, -4 goal difference
  4. Côte d’Ivoire: 0 points, -2 goal difference
  5. Senegal: 0 points, -8 goal difference

Why Rivalry Series Day 1 Matters

The biggest takeaway from the opening day is that the tournament may be much more open than expected. Kenya came in as an underdog and finished first.

Nigeria showed why playing at home could make them dangerous. Ghana bounced back after an opening loss. Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire now have a chance to recover when they play their postponed fixture. There is also another layer to the competition.

Several of the players involved already have international experience or major qualification achievements behind them.

Shaq, Faruk and Kyran were among the players who had qualified through the original ENC pathway, while the tournament also brought together other established names from across Africa.

With the ENC having been postponed, Rivalry Series has given these players another opportunity to compete against each other and keep the African FC scene moving.

Day 2

Action continues tomorrow from 10:00 AM. The postponed Senegal vs Côte d’Ivoire fixture will be part of the Day 2 action, with the remaining games set to reshape the leaderboard.

Fans can follow the tournament live on the CADE Esports YouTube channel. And if Day 1 is anything to go by, Day 2 is going to be worth watching.
